PUBLIC POLICY UPDATE
It has been said, “…focus on the effort and not the outcome…” It is true that CMSA-Chicago has been working hard alongside other healthcare advocates to get Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) legislation passed in Illinois for 10 years. Even though the outcome has not yet been successful, we are proud of the effort that has been expended, the things we have learned and the relationships that have been built while working on this noble cause. We trust that our efforts will eventually pay off.
The work the public policy committee has done during our 2021-22 season include:
- Local and national Public Policy educational presentations including: 1) “Public Policy and You” - Introduction to public policy matters and instruction on how case managers can best advocate for public policy change. 2) Explanation of Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC); legislative updates; it is impact on the future of healthcare delivery & it is potential to revolutionize nursing profession
- Published NLC articles and press releases
- We have sat down with powerful union representatives who oppose the NLC to try to find common ground
- We have worked closely with nursing coalition organizations who support NLC passage including National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) and American Nursing Association (ANA)
We are continuing to work over the summer to best prepare ourselves for the next Illinois Legislative Session beginning January 2023.
It is time to talk about YOU.
We would love to have you get more involved with CMSA-Chicago public policy advocacy. Your role is up to you. You can be an active member of our public policy committee or simply help on a small or larger project based upon your availability. For example, phoning our nursing coalition members and asking them to support NLC, reaching out to your local representatives and discussing with them the merits of NLC by using our talking points. Emailing your friends and circle of influence about the merits of NLC. Submit a two minute or less video on why you believe in passing the NLC legislation, and we can post in on NLCYES.com
If you are not already familiar with the Nurse Licensure Compact, please check out our site: https://nlcyes.com/ . You can also be a member of our Facebook page NLCYES which is a private group. Please request an invitation.
